The second night of the 30th annual Floyd Reynolds proved to be quite a bit more exciting than the first....A LOT MORE EXCITING! A total of 39 spints were on hand tonight.
The ASCS sprint cars ran four 10 lap heats to determine 12 starting spots for the feature. Four more cars transferred from the two B mains and the top four cars from last nights feature made up the 20 car lineup for the 30 lap feature.
Sounds easy....not quite. In heat 2 Steve Nix of Santa Fe was leading Pat Bourke into turn 3 when they touched wheels. Nix got sideways and tumbled end over end about three times before coming to rest in the catch fence above the wall in 3. The car was actually hanging by its front wheel from the top cable in the fence. At the same time Richard Johnson of Albq. came into the turn and missed Nix by inches but slammed into the wall and flipped a couple of times. It took about 30 minutes to get the two cars off the track and to repair the fence. Neither driver was injured. All that in a heat race. The other three heats went a little more smoothly. But then we moved to the B mains. In the first B, Kaylene Verville won again, just as she did last night in a B. Bo Baker drove Chuck Jackson's 19x to a 2nd place finish behind Verville. Midway in this 10 lap B, Mark Sweet of Rock Springs, Wy. took a tumble in turn one. One endo and a roll and Sweet's car was not so sweet anymore. He walked away. Moving on to the 2nd B main...Kyle McCutchin took the win with Pat Bourke 2nd. On lap two of this B, Bob Schafer of Albq. got tangled up with the back straight wall and rolled his #71 three times landing on his lid. Again the driver was uninjured.
Finally moving on to the 30 lap feature, the racing settled down to some fast racing with nobody getting upside down. Randi Miller of Rapid City, S.D. took the lead about lap 7 and went on to win. John Carney, Jr. of El Paso (last night's winner) was a very close 2nd and Jason Martin of Liberal, Ks. just as close for 3rd. Fourth spot went to Joe McCarthy of Broomfield, Co. and fith to Kyle Sager of Riodoso, N.M. Colt Treharn of Albq. was next followed in 7th by Derrick Ortega of Albq. Eighth was Brett Ream of Co. Springs.
This ASCS show was one of the best in sometime at Aztec Speedway and the car count was very impressive. The 39 car field was only 7 shy of the record for the Floyd Reynolds Memorial.
The IMCA sport modifieds, modifieds and stock cars also ran and put on their usual great races.
Allen Bradley took the win in the stock cars with Brandon Carley winning the modified feature. Garland Tucker led for 10 laps and finished a very good 4th.
Julie Boettler drove to her first sport modified win at Aztec.
The entire finish of each race can be seen on Speednetdirect.com
One more Saturday night of racing next week will close out the 2009 season for Aztec Speedway. The 2010 schedule is posted on AztecSpeedway.com.
A total of 24 nights of racing is on tap for next year with at least one sprint car show set for each month.
