The season ending championship night was a very good night of racing for the many fans in attendance. A night full of four wide racing and lap after lap of side by side racing for the front runners.
In the IMCA stock car feature, only 15 cars took the green flag but eight of them ran bumper to bumper and side by side for 25 laps. Michael Higgins took the lead early but Rex Higgins caught and passed him for the win with only a few to go. Following Rex and Micahel across the finish were Michael Farley, Allen Bradley and Richard Trujillo. Matthew Higgins was 6th. Rex Higgins needed just 8 points to capture the IMCA stock Regional Championship and with this win he closed the deal. Congrats to Rex!!
The Southern Sport Modifieds fielded 17 cars for their 25 lap feature. Zach Rouse needed to finish no worse than 3 spots behind Zach Hamilton to win the track championship...he did better than that...Rouse won the feature handily with Mark Rogers 2nd, Zach Hamilton settled for 3rd, Wayne Soares 4th and Julie Boettler 5th. Mark Milne was 6th.
The IMCA modifieds started 18 cars in their 25 lap feature. After a few cautions in the first two laps, the drivers settled down and raced. And what a race! Matthew Higgins took his modified to the front quickly. Higgins put the #74 up on the high side of the track and held off all challengers to win his 2nd feature of the year. JJ Harpole put on a hard charge at the end but could not get by so he settled for 2nd spot. In 3rd was Regan Tafoya, 4th was Brandon Carley and Tom Cadle 5th. Danny Bradford took 6th. Four of these drivers all challenged for the lead once or twice in the 25 laps but just couldn't get by a very determined Matthew Higgins.
In the 30 lap Snap on Tools feature for the crate models, Jeff Davis led all 30 laps to capture the win. The blue #40 looked like it was on a rail as Davis cruised around Aztec Speedway. A surprise entry and new crate model owner/driver chased Davis for 2nd. Kevin Brown of Durango, normally driving a modified, drove his new crate model up through the field for a great 2nd place. Third went to another newcomer to crate models. Mark Rogers, a sport modified driver, got behind the wheel of David Whittakers' #7 and raced into 3rd. Fourth was Cooter Frazier and fifth went to Richard Johnson. The racing was close for 2nd through 5th. Only one caution was thrown in this 30 lapper. Bobby Seals brought that out on lap 11 when he slipped up in turn one and tapped the wall. This was Seals' first run in a crate model. JR Bonesteel was also a new driver to Aztec taking his #00 to 12th. Fifteen crate models were on hand for this event. This class is growing rapidly.
The hobby feature was won by Roger Nixon with Dennis Spencer 2nd, Randy Dorsett 3rd, Luke Rowe 4th and Jason Duggins 5th. Nixon led 11 of the 15 laps.
The mini stock feature was an easy win for Larry Rust. 2nd went to Ken Ellis,Jr, 3rd was Darell Cordary, 4th spot was Shelly Griffin and Jim Griffin was 5th.
