The fun at Sandia Motor Speedway Saturday night started early with the 2008 Slug Bug Cruisin" Caravan and Car Show. This event was sponsored by Christy Mae's, Performance Flat four and Automotive Machine. We also were happy to welcome the folks from Raceway Express, a group that offers packages for NASCAR events including hotel accommodations and transportation to and from the race track. The division with the highest car count* was the NM Spring and Suspension Mini Stocks. The main saw the red flag come out because of a scary crash when Lee Sontag in the number 3 hit the turn four wall hard (or is it the turn eight) After some tense moments the word came that Lee was shaken but basically OK but the car extremely damaged. Larry Johnson took the win but lost his car in a wild round of claims. The only car truly safe from a claim seemed to be the number 3 The claiming started when Herm Segura, who posted $1000, claimed the number 09 of Bruce Winter. Bruce in turned claimed the number 77 of Nathan Steinman, Nathan chose the 8 of Brenda Gantt, Brenda said "give me Ashley's 08 car", Ashley Gantt took the winning number 29 of Larry Johnson, Larry claimed the 14 of Andy Fowner. And Andy pocketed the money. The heat winners were Nathan Steinman and Adrian Davis. 18 year old Adrian scored his first win and immediately following his win, his mother, Adel Davis took to the track as the winner of the hot laps (and a couple of Donuts) in the right seat of the #5 Pro Challenge racer with Jim Johnson at the wheel. Back to the Main and before the claims...... behind Larry Johnson the order was Bruce Winter, Nathan Steinman, Brenda Gantt, Bill Payne, James Wallace lll, Adrian Davis, Andy Fowner, Ashley Gantt, Greg Kuehl, Patricia Gallegos, Bob Miller, Leo Dennisson, Frank Payne, David Dodge, Lee Sontag, Kevin Connerley, Andrew Fowner, and Ryan Winter. ------------------------- It was teacher vs students for much of the Legend field Sat. night. Two time National Champion and holder of the speed record for Legends at Pikes Peek, Robert Gayton faced a field who's combined ages barely added up to his. OK. I sort of exaggerated there, but about half the field was made up of teen age former quarter midget stars now under the guidance of Gayton. These drivers are in a category called semi-pro (S). There are two other categories in this division, Pro (P) and Master (M). Gayton THE MASTER, won his heat and Zach Powell (P) won the other. In the main it was semi-pro Kenneth Baker taking the win. Behind him was Mike Harris (S), 13 year old Justin Irwin (S), Gayton, Zach Powell, Dylan Trujillo (S), Michael McKinney (M), Doug Cloud (M), Robert Scott from Tucson, and Greg Kuehl (S). ----------------------- In the Car Crafters Modifieds, there were tears of joy in victory lane from the Gantt family as Willis Johnson won his first feature. Second went to Johnny Dorcas, then Mick Jepsen, Bruce Martin, David Meek Sr, points leader Frank Dutton, Gary Richards ll, David Radman and Race Safro. ------------------------- Edward Doerges was the Slug Bug feature winner, second went to Larry Reynolds Jr, followed by Larry Reynolds Sr, Kevin Sevier and Steve Thacker. Steve Thacker was the heat winner. ------------------------- Sue Rose of Superior Mortgage presented the trophy to Patricia Gallegos, winner of the La Donna Wichern, Keller Williams: Sue Rose, Superior Mortgage Lightning Fast Ladies main. Second was Lisa Steinman, Third Patricia's mother Michelle Fowner, and fourth Jennifer Mansker. Sept 6th the USLMA makes it's last stop at Sandia before the Salsa 100 on Oct 4th. The program will include the Slug Bugs, Legends, and the Rockem Sockem Street Stocks who will also be on the track Oct 4th for the first annual Street Stock Invitational. See ya there. * results here are arranged in order of car count.
