Rachel Greenberg Summer Sizzler - Wins 4 Jr. Dragster Races in July and August! July and August are almost always the busiest part of the racing season. This year has been no exception as Rachel ran 9 races and 2 test sessions in the two month period, including a stretch where she spent 12 days racing between July 4 and August 2. In addition to races in Albuquerque, she was one of the Albuquerque track representatives at the NHRA Western Conference Finals in Denver. Rachel has a history of doing exceptionally well at Albuquerque’s big holiday weekend racing shows and this Labor Day weekend was no exception. On Saturday (8/30/08), Albuquerque Dragway attracted the largest Junior Dragster field of the year. Rachel had a nearly flawless night to wade through 5 rounds of tough competition and take the event win. Rachel continued her hot streak by winning all 4 rounds of competition in the Jr. Dragster class on Sunday night (8/31/08) to take the event win. For the two races over Labor Day weekend, Rachel was undefeated in 9 straight rounds of competition. This was Rachel’s third consecutive win in Albuquerque and fourth of the season. The performance moved her into the Albuquerque Dragway season points championship lead. Rachel also took the Jr. Dragster event wins at Albuquerque Dragway on Aug. 2 and July 4th. One of the most exciting developments of 2008 was the Skinner family’s invitation to let Rachel drive their “Outlaw 330” Jr. Dragster at the NHRA Western Conference Finals for Jr. Dragsters in July. An Outlaw 330 car is much more powerful than an ordinary Jr. Dragster – so much so that they are only allowed to race over a 330 foot distance. The cars typically run 60 foot times in the 1.4 – 1.5 second range and cover the 330 foot distance in the mid-4 second range. These times are roughly the equivalent of a high 10 second quarter mile run. To prepare for driving the Skinner’s car in Denver, Rachel was able to test in their car in mid-July. After experiencing the increased power, her regular Jr. Dragster ride seemed tame by comparison. Rachel launches the Skinner Family dragster at Bandimere Speedway in Denver. The NHRA Western Conference Finals for Jr. Dragsters is nothing short of an amazing experience. It is the longest (racing commenced on July 21 and continued through July 26) and biggest event of the season. Although attendance was down at “only” 450 cars (down from 650+ last year, no doubt due to the high cost of travel), the competition was still extremely intense. In the Outlaw 330 qualifying, crew chiefs Alan and Janna Skinner were able to consistently improve the car’s performance. Rachel ran a best time of 4.79 to qualify 22nd. She also showed that she had a handle on the “Pro Tree” starting lights with three consecutive runs that had reaction times between .05 and .06. The qualifying ladder paired her up with the #9 qualified car. Her car just did not quite have enough power and Rachel lost the round. Rachel then competed in the Mile High Shootout on Wed. and the weather fooled Lyle into choosing a dial-in that proved to be very inaccurate and they lost first round. In the actual Western Conference Finals, Rachel defeated a former national champion to win her first round match-up and then lost in the second round by a very close margin. The Greenberg Racing Junior Dragster team’s next event will be Sept. 20 in Albuquerque.
