Engine Claim

Just curious what memories most racers have of the IMCA claim,how many they remember and who?
my memories;
1st claimed by Tracy Harris back in 1998 or 99,claimed him back the next week
2nd Duane Oldfield(sp)
3rd Steve Piper
4th Rick Ward @ Canyon Raceway
5th Karl Tipton @ Manzanita
i claimed Andrew Frazier but gave it back to him after i saw what junk it was,lol

I hated the Engine Claims especially when Persons came out of the Stands & took our Engines home for Non-Racing Use. When I had Donna Nossett's Neat 55 Chevy CLAIMER, I ran 3rd in a SPEEDWAY PARK 500 Lapper behind 30 "LIP" (Gaylord)& #47 Donnie Byers. Think I made 319 Laps; + a SPECIAL THANKS to Bruce Childers & Vic Duggar that day. Next year a Dude claimed it & chickened out of the Class as moved her up into B LATE MODELS. DARN !! So I claimed a "BAD" (roll cage) '57 Chevy from Rick Blaney. Also recall the Year at DUKE CITY that Bobby Kovak won in a CADILLAC and was getting upset with being Claimed 3-4 times as had to pull used motors, re-do bearings, etc. & still continued to Win. Good Driver with a Fair Motor = a Winner. Great Motor and so so Driver = ???? jwz

I also have memories of other racers being claimed,one night J.R Fanelli and i both got bought the same night,John Pauques got bought with a borrowed motor so he got one back out of the top 4 at the season finale when all 4 top finishers got bought.Scott Burson also.
It was a whole different game then.

Yes sir we had plenty of them. well , probably not more than 2 a year. big problem with that is yeah it's ok to take the motor from a guy with money.. Kind of Obamic... lol... but what about the guy that is just barely getting by. You take his or her motor and now the track has lost a racer (maybe forever).. Other thing is most claims are due to jealousy, ignorance, revenge, anger, or other non racing reasons. Good riddens claims..

Funny thing about the claim is as much as we all hated it, we hated it more when IMCA started spec'ing parts too!Damm imca mufflers!!!

i got no problem w/ spec stuff most was done for a good reason like wheels. we was going to kill ourselves mounting them dang oversized wheels. list what is spec'ed and why might make a interesting list and maybe i might agree..

wheels- spec'ed for safety reasons
mufflers- so travellers can have same rule everywhere
what else we need to add to the list?

so you think it is ok to have an engine claim AND spec engine parts like no stud girdles/no roller cams?The muffler rule sucked because a $3 muffler became a $30 muffler,they req'd it and it didn't muffle worth a darn,the wheel deal needed fixing like royal said,they created it,and finally allowing right side bead loks fixed what was a no-brainer to start with,we all bought alot of extreme beads back then?!Hell we ran an air hose out 100' with a clip on chuck and let er blow up till it seated,70-80 psi sometimes.Scary stuff.
The muffler pissed me off the most because my 350 inch motor wouldn't run with that muffler,too much choke,...

Wheels were dangerous because IMCA would not allow a bead lock on the right side. therefore people built big beads on the tire making them dangerous to air up but virtually impossible t get off the wheel. so they allowed the bead lock but made people run stamped wheels.... They fixed the safety problem that they created and made mucho dinero. Muffler so they are the same... I call BS on that one too... how about so they can also make money on those like they do spindles, and numerous other items.. Remember they are in business to make a profit so I am not bad mouthing them... Hell, my wife drinks coffee that costs 4.50 a cup.. You wanna claim her...lol...

That's right,he refused the claim,i remember trying to talk him into letting it go,but he was mad,mad at the guy claiming him?!So he had to sell out and quit or pay the fine.Part of the game!

Thats the idiot that started the whole thing ! I remember being in a board meeting at great western electric and thats all that guy wanted to get clear on, what was the claim procedure. Seen it coming, thats why we raced las cruces for all those years back then. No complaints though, raced with some of the best guys around and made some good friends in the process. Good times with lorne,royal,scott,barnetts,terry,mike wells, too many to name. Santa Teresa was running back then....wow ! good times ! all but pulling gears in tech, not fun.

Yeah, better rules and enforcement of them is the better way to keep people racing. The claim was probably alright originally and made it where teching wasn't needed (easier on tracks and sanction bodies) but lead to lots of misery for many. Truman, I think the cost of ASCS motor has skyrocketed mainly because of ability to rev the crap out of the motors. High RPM leads to Higher cost per night--bottom line--One reason why the Racesaver or ASCS 305 works is becasue we are all on the same thing as far as cam lift, springs, heads, short block with 48lb crank etc. A 360 with the same basic rules would be really cool, but the 305 deal already exists. Just depends on whether you are a Saturday night racer or a traveling tour kind of guy. WOO is great to watch but could never last on a local level.

Royal, does your A Mod 8,000 Chip rule save money? I can remember the time when nobody would dare turn their motors that tight, since they couldnt afford to go through them every 8-10 races!

Joe, over the years people just kept revving them higher and higher. That being said 8,000 saves versus 8500 to 9,000. We run our motors around 40 nights before freshening. at 8400 you can get to 15 if you are lucky. Parts inside to live at 8 are a lot less than higher rpm motors.
