�The Battle of Aztec�

The Invasion by USRA Modifieds of the historically IMCA controlled Aztec Speedway continues with a �Twin $1000 to win, $100 to start� showdown on June 8th and 9th. This two day �Battle of Aztec� will pit the states best IMCA modified drivers against the invading USRA Modifieds in a true war of dominance.

The war started last October when a USRA driver stole the Breast Cancer Awareness Race from the 2010 IMCA National Champion�on his home track. The IMCA drivers were not thrilled about a home town upset, swearing vengeance against the �invaders�. This Battle of Aztec will quickly prove to be the showdown of a lifetime.

General Sherman once said, �War is hell� and it is indeed breaking loose all over Aztec Speedway. The plea is out to all IMCA modified drivers to come and help save Aztec Speedway from the large band of USRA drivers that are looking to overtake the northern New Mexico outpost. A modest entry fee of $50 per skirmish.

Also on hand to try to conquer Aztec Speedway both nights will the CLMA Late Models, Stock cars, and for one night only on June 8th will be the IMCA Southern Sportmods, and June 9th will be the hobby stocks. All five of these classes are sure to provide the very best two day racing experience in the area, so be sure to pick up your tickets which will be on sale at the speedway box office at the following prices: Adult $15.00, Youth $10.00 6-14, children 5-under are free, Family Pack are also available for $35.00 (2 adults and 3 youths), and of course military and seniors are only $12.00.

Last month racing in Show Low...
Talked to Troy Cooke...said he's in.
He's won a feature already this year and looked really good @ the meltdown in Cruces.
Also talked w/Richie Davis&Max Sadler...wouldn't surprise me to see them in Aztec.

The Total Seal team(Ricky Thornton&Joey Moriarty) have announced they're bringing both mods&late models to race.
...Thornton has won on every track in Arizona,kids crazy fast.

So...
It sounds like you'll be getting USRA&IMCA,hitters from AZ.
Gonna be an awesome field of cars...

wasn't that race race shortened due to "time" issues? and if i remember, one of the contenders had an altercation with a lapped car and ended up in the wall due to a broken part.

Fito Gallardo of Las Cruces, N.M. moved up from a 3rd row start to take the win in the 35 lap feature at Aztec Speedway Saturday night. The race was scheduled for 40 laps but was shortened by 5 laps due to several caution periods and one red flag. The race was shaping up for some heavy action up front as the 2011 track champion, Porter Smith, flew by on the cushion to claim the front spot. Along with Smith came the G17 of Gallardo. Smith lead for the next 15 laps with Gallardo glued to his bumper. Gallardo�s chance to pass Smith came on the front stretch as the two started lapping the field. Smith slid up into Robert Ortega on the front stretch and broke an a-arm in the process. Smith lost the lead but kept his foot in it. As he entered turn 3, the car turned a sharp right and went head-on into the wall. Smith was ok but the car was done. When racing resumed Gallardo had glimpses of momentary challenges from Garrett Higgins and Danny Bradford. As the laps wound down Zane Devilbiss started working his Pink Panther #18z closer to the front. Devilbiss moved past Bradford and Higgins and was about 4 car lengths behind Gallardo as the white flag came out. Devilbiss went low into 3 to get side by side with Gallardo but the momentum wouldn�t hold on the bottom line and Fito Gallardo came out of turn 4 in front and won by a car length. In a post race chat, Devilbiss expressed his disgust with the decision to shorten the race by 5 laps. He had set up for a 40 lapper and it appeared that his game plan was coming to fruition until the race was shortened. Gallardo was quite happy with the win as that makes his record at Aztec Speedway perfect�.three times here and three wins.

This write-up has always bothered me. Conveniently, this video was just posted to YouTube a little while back so I could replay the race for my own sanity. You tell me who "slid up into" who.....

If you watch closely on the next lap on the front straight when Fito finally manages to pass the guy, he almost cleans Fito out at the the flagstand with the same move. Always fun when lap cars want to race the leaders on the fast line of a 1-lane track.

ok, i watched the video--OUCH!!--, i didn't remember that Porter was leading when the incident happened, the lapped car came from the top and ran into Porter on his way to the bottom.

That sounds cool. I know USRA allows racetracks to tweak the rules to better suit their area, what particular rules will apply here? 8000 chip, quick change rearend, aluminum heads and roller cams?

Good point Paul, We will be following The same rule package that cruces/el paso run. This is also a sanctioned points race with USRA.

Since the races are in Aztec, you might consider getting the rules and sticking them on the speedway website. I posted your write-up and got hits, but had nowhere to send them for info.

Couple of questions are you all going to be allowing abq area hobby stocks come up and run with your hobbys like last october? And are you all going to run the same october show this year and will we be able to come up for that show as well? Thank you.

Yes, we will be allowing the alb. area cars for those 2 events. All cars must meet these minimum requirements, Cast iron intake, maximum 2 barrel 500 cfm carb. Mufflers, Fuel cell flapper valve, covered battery post, weigh minimum 3250.

Unless they changed our Street stock rules, none of our local cars run a 2 Barrel Carb, Mufflers or weigh 3,250 lbs!

Joe, please see Napaspeedway.com the rules for the Street Stocks (formally Hobby Stocks) will answer those questions for you. Add some weight and mufflers our guys can run up there!

P.S. Joe the cars in which you were referring to as being Street Stocks, 4 barrel carbs, weight jacks, Hoosier Softy tires, they have gone away sadly.

Gary, about 10-12 years ago a few Aztec Stockers (Alan Bradley, Rex Higgins, Jesse Baldwin, Andy Hockenhull). Used to run at both Duke City and HH! They ran against Jim Willis, Jay Pape, Shawn Dutcher, etc....The Street stocks then could run 4 Bbl carbs but No Weightjacks!
