According to a 50th Anniversary book about the movie,there were around twelve actual monkey suits made for the midgets who played the Winged Monkeys to wear.There were around two dozen little monkey puppets shown in the background to give the impression that there were more monkeys who attacked Dorothy and her friends.(That scene has to be one of the scariest scenes for the younger viewers.)
