Side awards are picked during line up. Not when each child is on stage. Usually each judge picks 1 or 2 side awards. Their decisions is based SOLELY on what they see during line up. And I have seen SEVERAL children do AWESOME on stage and then when it comes time for lineup shy away, cry, run all over the stage whatever.
In return I have also seen children (my daughter included) who didn't do ANYTHING on stage but when it was time for lineup just turned it on and showed her stuff.
Also just a another note because I have seen this ask before also. How can my daughter win Queen and no side awards. The explanation above answers that as well. Also, some directors will tell their judges to spread the side awards out between the children so the same child does not get everything.
