Melody,I have judged Children's Pageants and have a child that has competed, so I understand how you may feel. The Queen/ King title is selected by POINTS totaled from ALL the judges' scoresheets on areas such as poise, personality, overall stage presence, etc.
The individual categories such as prettiest eyes, hair, etc. are usually assigned to separate judges. The winners are chosen during the lineup and is solely that judge's opinion. Rather than points, the selection is made by picking the Contestant number.
The individual categories usually provides other contestants, besides the selected queen/king, with the pride and excitement of winning, and a sense of accomplishment. There have been times when one contestant won ALL categories, or worse, when one child was left without a win AT ALL- But its just chance of how the voting fell.
