Personally, I like bold solids. BUT, that is not as important (Sort of personal preference) as the picture - the contestant. I prefer, as I think most judges do, to focus on the face & hair. Close-up - mostly head-shot. If you look up glitz photography you are able to see samples of their work & that will give you some ideas on what to wear, etc
