Posted by Chris19 on 4/24/2007, 4:10 am I plan on trying it when I go home with my parents this summer. I have a book by Dr. Steven Soifer about paruresis in which Soifer says graduated exposure therapy helped him recover completely so he no longer has paruresis. I think this is the most sensical technique for recovering from a phobia, I just wondered if anyone has tried it or is currently trying it. Or how about other techniques to overcome shy bowels? What have you all tried? If you can't tell, I'm really excited to hear how the workshop goes this weekend; I'm in the US and can't be there Thanks for any ideas and stories!
Has anyone actually tried graduated exposure therapy for parcopresis? For those who don't know what that is, I believe mathman talks about it in "Best of the Message Board." It's a therapy effective on phobias in which you get a partner to stand near (or far) from the bathroom while you poo, far enough away that you are comfortable but are slightly pressured. Eventually you bring the partner closer and closer until you can poo with the door open, partner standing there. Then you move on to public bathrooms and so on. ![]()
