Posted by Liz W (In Austin) To start with, let me say, I do love my mother in law, and my husband's whole family. They're a smart, funny, sweet group of people. She's just a little flakey sometimes about some things.

Hi all
Just have to vent and look for ideas here.
The background is, my mother and father-in-law have these two great dogs. One is a weird little terrier, the other is a very sweet and gorgeous big hound mix mutt of some sort. The big guy is 12 years old, and starting to get arthritis a bit, but is a good boy and still happy and everything.
The part that really kills me about all this is, they've, specifically she has, raised these two dogs as siblings to their human children, which is fine, but then we get to the problem now.
The problem is, if you don't go outside with him, he forgets to poop sometimes, then he comes in and poops on the floor. This isn't a massive clean up. You pick up the poo, spray the disenfectant on the spot, and wipe with a paper towel. No biggie. Or, you go out with the dog and remind him to poo. Even better, you get him on a regular schedule of walks and remind him to poo on his walk, instead of just letting them into the back yard unattended.
At any rate, she 'can't deal with this'. I'm supposing she can't deal with going out to remind him now that it's cold, either, since that was too much of a pain in the butt in the summer.
I tried to suggest doggie diapers, but she 'really couldn't deal with that'. She's been talking about this for months now, and is trying to get approval from us/convince herself that this is the right thing to do, murdering him because he's no longer convenient.
I am so mad, I can't sleep, I can't eat, I'm so upset. They're taking him to the vet today for a 'check-up', not sure if this is the real reason or not.
There's still lots of stuff to try in order to deal with this. I have no idea what to do. I'm on the verge of telling them to send him here, to our tiny apartment, with our 2 dogs and 7 fish tanks and no room, thousands of miles away, and I'll deal with him into his dotage. He's a GOOD BOY. He's been a faithful and loving dog, he's been a fierce watchdog, he's been an important part of their family for 12 freaking years. Now, she can't deal with poo, so she is going to murder him.
Help! I don't know what to do, my brain is all addled and upset, and I'm starting to have a panic attack.
Thanks for listening and suggesting.
