Posted by Jenna on 5/7/2004, 7:48 am Tylers mom mentioned that his family would like to hear reflections from others during this time, so I thought I would share with you the time I was fortunate enough to spend with Tyler two years ago this month. On May 3, 2002, Tyler held a viewing of his documentary in Munich for the people in, and associated with, our study abroad program. His camcorder broke, again, so it was very frustrating for him to have to show the lesser-quality video version. But the audience was very receptive and he enjoyed answering their questions afterward. Tyler kept a running list of new German vocabulary in his journal. Each week he noted the new words and sometimes there was a specific date by a word. On May 3 Tyler learned trauern um which means to mourn for. On May 7 Tyler had a doctor appointment and results would later show that everything was fine. The next day, May 8th, Preston and his friend Shive arrived in Munich for a much-anticipated visit. That evening, Tyler, Preston and Shive took an overnight train to Berlin. On May 11 the three of them left Berlin and headed for Hamburg. Tyler noted in his journal that he called Vanessa to wish her a happy birthday. On this day he learned streben nach which means to strive for, something Tyler knew very well how to do. On May 15th Preston and Shive flew back to the US and two days later on the 17th, Tyler and I took a train to Venice, Italy. On the 20th we went to Innsbruck, Austria, where we spent the night and then returned to Munich on the 21st. Tyler wrote in his journal that he felt at home when he arrived back in Munich. On Tylers birthday he and I celebrated with a big meal at Asado Steak House. On the 29th of May Tyler and I took a train to Paris and on the 30th we attended the French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros. It was an extremely fun experience and Tyler and I marveled at how blessed we were to be there. After seeing the sights of Paris, we returned to Munich on Sunday, June 2. In May of 2002 Tyler was having adventures in Europe, and in May of 2003 he was having adventures of a whole new kind in heaven. What a blessing.

As one year approaches since Tyler went to heaven a lot of memories come to mind for me. Naturally Ive been thinking of the course of events that took place last May, just as Tylers mom described in her latest post. But Ive also been thinking of my memories from May of 2002, two years ago. With the help of Tylers journal that he kept while studying abroad, and from my own personal memory, I marveled at the difference one years time can make. One year prior to Tylers death I think a relapse was far from his mind. This reminds me of Gods amazing sovereignty and gives clearer meaning to the words of James. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, If it is the Lords will, we will live and do this or that. (James 4:14-15 NIV)
