G'day Bruce - as always a thoughtful and rational argument... from distant memory I believe that the rules/laws of the game back you up. It is the umpires (working in conjunction with the captains) who should control such matters.
Like you - I hope this issue will become a very minor footnote in another competitive and memorable series.
