I think what you're missing here is Professionalism and the extra dimension that it brings to the game.
Players are no longer playing solely for the pride of representing their country.
Like anyone who moves abroad to pursue better work prospects, etc. we're seeing guys packing in careers early, so as not to miss out on the big money chances playing 20/20 leagues. I'm not saying it's right - It's just the way things are these days.
Cricket Boards can't be blamed for selecting someone who is a better player and is eligible through some technicality ahead of a 'True Englishman' or any other national.
At the end of the day, the team needs to be winning to generate the extra support at the margin, (not from guys like us - god knows I support the black caps wholeheartedly and we're mostly losing!), that's going to allow them to continue operating. Obviously they need to pick the players that will give them the best chance of this.
