an excellent thread...cracking read and good healthy debate....just wanted to share
i think matt and leon sum up the case for the defence quite well. although i would personally prefer to see an english player brought up through the ranks, i'm equally aware that this is no longer the only route to the national team.
the only point i'd like to add is that i love it when a player born/raised in my beloved Lancashire turns out for his country (i get an extra special feeling when Jimmy or Freddie would turn on the style for example in the same way that i'm sure Matt, Nick or Yorkshire experience with Vaughan...despite the fact he was born in Manchester
) so the increase of players born outside the UK reduces the chance of this. that's not to say that i wouldn't be wholly behind a KP or a Trott, just that in an ideal world i'd rather be cheering on a lad from Burnley or Preston as opposed to a fella from say Jo'burg.
however i appreciate that times are a changing and if England feel they need to and are able to adopt players born outside the UK (but who are English in all but birthplace) then i don't have any issue with that. take me for example on a slighter smaller scale - i was born in Stone which is in Staffordshire but i see myself as 100% Lancastrian as i was raised there and 50% Welsh as my family (especially grandparents and further back) came from the valleys...
x
(or should that be X?)
