When representing a country in sport I think nationality very much does play an importance. If every country swapped players then the Ashes may as well be played by Green Sox v's Blue Lions.
As you say, nationality is playing less and less of a part in our globalised society. However, if sport followed suit surly that would be a sad thing. Two teams, each representing their counties, coming together to play cricket does more for intonational harmony than any political meeting ever could.
