Mild intellectual imparment

I have a son who is mild intellectual imparment who is labelled by his doctor. What does this mean? He is 11 years old and his thinking is 8 years old. He looks normal and a happy child as compare with the normal child. He is a preteem child. How can I help him? Please advise.
