I removed a message on the restaurants comments board and here's what I got back:
"Right- so you've removed it- great- what the hell was a comment like that doing on a public forum for 3 days anyway- why didn't one of you pick up on it before you allowed it on? If i were MacDonald's et al I'd be suing your arses off right now! Do you realise the damaging effect your website has on small business's?- OK so, not that many potential customers may have used your site ( or maybe they have-- who knows?)- but I, like many other business's peruse it for my own monitor of whats out there- therefore no doubt our competitors would've seen those comments- and being that we are probably one of the most popular of the many restaurants in the Old Town- they're going to have a field day spreading this one around-- and you know what?-- this is the sort of thing that can cripple/bankrupt a small restaurant such as ours.
The problem with your 'public forum' is that you cant possibly police it-- just as vicious libellous comments can be get by you- so can, fantastical reviews be posted by family members etc--( I can assure you we've not stooped so low- but I bet many have)- either way the unsuspecting potential customer probably gets a warped view - so how do you separate the fact from the fiction?
It's horrible seeing defamatory comments about your own business- of course we make mistakes- and we try damned hard to rectify them before customers leave the restaurant- and yes, I know one cant account for the many nasty people out their that get a kick from posting this sort of garbage- but It's really really difficult to not reply to these reviews ( I even have to hold back from thanking people for their good reviews- cos I'm polite!) - and then that seems to open a whole other can of worms- as I've experienced from your site- oh , speaking of which-that review- to which I replied several times,(one of the first ones you posted) really was factually incorrect and now because of these events I really am thinking of complaining further.
I'm just warning you- that if you continue to allow incorrect information about my restaurant to be posted on your website- then I am going to take action against you.
I'm watching!
Ellie."
