Jenny, I read and reread all the posts from the other board when this whole event came out. The people who are blaming the the man who got bit are missing the point. The dog bit regardless of the level of threat. the dog was ina common area in a buisness area behind a fence that was not adequate to protect the animal from its behavior. I come from a different background than most, and I can tell you thousands of dogs are PTS everyday for incidents just like thses. Was the dog guarding the fence, probably, but the hand over the fence did not justify the bite. The dog should have been barking, announcing the threat to itself and its territry. The person who said this dog was not the most friendly dog should have known that this scenario was just a matter of time, considering the fencing and access to people who could approach her. we see to may mjastiffs ringside that lunge at people or other dogs, that growl ect that are not immediately corrected if corrected at all, and it makes me cringe. I had rotties, and did rottie rescue through the shelter before coming into mastiffs, and I have never been able to tolerate a dog whose behavior is not acceptable. It takes training and immediate correction to make them socialy acceptable.
I said in my earlier post that she will probably get sued, sometime in the future. regardless of how he feels now, because all the commercials and friends will tell him this is the way to be compensated for this occurance. Its a shame but it is the way it goes. I hope that she has learned from this and extended the fencing, Justifing a dog bite based on the humans behavior is overlooking the problem of a dog that bites.
