Jenny here is my ever so humble opinion. I SOO agree with Brenda that Mastiff temperaments are straying from what they should be. You did say that the dog was at the Grooming shop and not her home right? Also The gal refers to this particular b###h as her “non-tolerant of stranger” b###h. That to me implys that this particular dog is not the friendliest to begin with. Which is why THIS particular dog should NOT have been outside in a fenced area where someone could stick their hands over to try to pet her. Yes Humans are stupid BUT the law doesnt care about that when someone gets bit. The dog BIT him he did not attack the dog.
Also Mastiffs can be deceitful in that she may have been wagging her tail at him so he thought it might have been ok to pet her who knows. Bottom line it is the dog owners responsibilty to keep the public safe from a dog that MAY bite.
I persoanlly do NOT think it is ok for a Mastiff to bite for ANY reason. They are supposed to hold intruders at bay NOT bite them.
I have seen my big guy charge the meter reader when he comes in the yard not knowing he is out but he will NOT bite he just warms him he is not welcome.
So my opinion is if this dog is known not to like strangers than it should not have been out unsupervised. In California the Diane Whipple law is very strict if you know a dog has a tendancy to be aggressive and someone gets bit YOU are at fault not the human.
I would really hate to see our Breed on BSL now Pitt Bulls are in S F now , next is the Mastiff if we dont pay attetion.
