Hi all,
I had to let my grandpa Great Dane go last night at 5:00 p.m. He had been diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy and Muscle Atrophy. This has caused him to fall quite a bit but I did not give up at that point since it did not cause pain. I knew it might cause humiliation (if a dog knows that feeling?) I seen a look in his eyes that he was giving up though. My ex, Mike has been here a lot to take care of the animals when I was at work and he told me that he took Aspen out for a walk in the woods behind our house and Aspen fell 20 feet from the gate. Aspen got up and walked back to the gate. He did not even want to walk any more.
I feel blessed to have had him for 7 1/2 years and blessed that I was able to be the one to let him go. I gave him 3 mg of ace IV and let him relax and I was the one to let him go to the bridge. No strangers. Mike, myself and Aspen. Aspen put his head on my lap, then Mikes then on his blanket. Almost to let me know it was time......
I hope he met all of our past animals there!
