I would appreciate any information at all on this man, who may or may not be of your family, for research I am conducting on the circumstances of early English settlement of America. Sir Marmaduke was one of the three or four sponsors of Capt. John Smith's first voyage to New England, in March 1613/14, after Smith's departure from the Virginia colony and publication of his first book in 1612. I have identified one source, which I have not been able to obtain yet, but that is rather old, and tangential, being dedicated to his nephew and namesake ("The Life of Marmaduke Rawdon of York," by Robert Davies, Camden Society, LXXXV, 1863). Otherwise, all I know is this, from Philip Barbour's "Complete Works of Captain John Smith": "London merchant who married a wealthy heiress [Elizabeth Thorowgood]; traded, largely in wines, in France, Portugal, the Netherlands, and elsewhere, and later invested capital in Barbados." Thank you for any assistance you might provide.
