Hi Brien, Glad that you got it back together OK and that it worked well--at least initially. That is important as you now need to get back to the status as initially fitted.
You say that the pip nuts were not "pipping". I take this to mean that they were not locking on the spring. If this is the case then presumably the nuts were slackening off in use giving a pressure plate that was not freeing up squarely thus giving poor shift quality.
Not sure what you mean by poor quality "pip" nuts but if faulty then they certainly need to be replaced. When you are fitting new ones make sure that the pressure plate is lifting squarely as described to you in a private e-mail.
Removing the pip nuts can be somewhat difficult. If it is a MAJOR ball buster then you may have them tightened too much intially. Try not screwing them in quite as much (maybe one or two threads less than previously or one or two complete threads sticking out of the end of the nut). The 7 plate clutch theoretically should not need so much spring pressure as the original clutch (that is partly where the lighter action comes from).
