<<is there supposed to be a plain rubber O-ring between the chain drive sprocket and the "high gear"???>>
The parts books, don't show or list the 71-1070 O-ring (that fits between the sprocket and the lock washer) until the 1974 season.
The O-ring was introduced to stop gearbox oil from finding its way out along the sprocket/high gear splines. However, if you didn't apply any gasket sealant to the splines then oil may still leak from the splines?
Is there a groove in the splines of the high gear just below the outer face of the sprocket? Unfortunately, you will have to remove the nut and lockwasher to see that if you don't remember?
The later sprocket normally has a chamfer that guides the O-ring into that groove as the lockwasher is tightened against it by the nut, the spline tabs on the lockwasher of course, face outwards, use grease on the O-ring.
Personally, I would want to fit the O-ring if that groove is actually there, but maybe your '73 model won't have it?
