Yes--that is also my recollection.
I seem to remember press releases and artists impressions but I am not sure if these models made it to the hardware stage.
Would be interesting to pick one up though if any were made and do exist.
Bit of a problem with parts though I guess---probably have to make/modify oneself.
Also as you say---it is the guys at the top who get the credit for new designs---but usually they are conspicious by their absence if blame for a poor design needs to be apportioned!
