<<spring side facing towards sprocket is this wrong.>> Yes that is wrong, as the garter spring side would normally go towards the oil, but there's no oil pressure behind the seal so it may not leak? If it doesn't leak, then I wouldn't worry too much. If it's a 'dry' belt drive you've fitted, then it's not going to matter anyway.
