As Les quite rightly says the Interference fit washer/seal can work very well, but the service reason for the removable circlip/ washer arrangement being introduced was that after the "leakproof" (and they never were) seals failed it was quite difficult to ensure the sides of the seal wall were clean and dust free with that big washer in the way, so often a refit only incurred another failure, hence the removable washer/circlip was introduced. The other advantage of the circlip arrangement was that an exact gap could be ensured between the washer and the seal. But i've had all three on a variety of T140's in the past and can't choose between them on a longevity front, some seem to work and others don't so I stick with the rigid ones, for no good reason at all really!
