There is every chance that either one or both coils are indeed failing, possibly due to old age? But of course, the problem could still be elsewhere, such as a bad wiring or switch connection, or the pickup coils or the soldered connections on the pickup could be giving up? So I suggest that you check the whole system thoroughly.
