Ahh, Russ... the old 'one side's richer than the other' puzzle eh...?
Take it from me, this one can be a bugger to cure...
you're right in that Number One Suspect is quite possibly the float height (although you don't mention what carbs you have) but in answer to your question regarding other factors to consider, well, there's all of them!
Running rich, or at least the symptoms thereof, can also be due to poor combustion, so make sure that the ignition is working properly on that side. Try swapping components over [plug, coil etc] if you want to experiment.
It can also be due to lower compression so the best check to see if it's mechanicals that are letting you down is a compression test to check if both sides are equal. If the rich side has lower compression it means that you have to check things like valve gap settings and piston rings.
If you do a compression test and it's low, squirt in a bit of engine oil and try again. If the reading improves it means you have a piston ring problem (the oil would have temporarily sealed the leak) but if it doesn't improve it means you have a leaking valve.
That sort of thing is a pain however, so let's hope it's just the carb that's playing up...
Cheers!
Rudi
