It would help you a lot with diagnosis Mick if you can pinpoint the exact location. An old trick is to get a long handled screwdriver, use the handle end pressed against your ear then press the tip on likely spots. You've be amazed at how well it works, especially if you block the other ear with cotton wool.
It's not impossible for timing gears to wear - I have seen them when one hasn't been located correctly and a ridge is worn in the teeth. After re-assembly that can cause all sorts of nasty noises - but it is quite unusual as the gears are, as you noted, pretty robust.
Can you describe the noise yet?
