Gearboxes/timing pinions very tough on Triumph T140 machines, only a problem with early Electric start mechs. If it's like a metallic rustling which gets louder, like tin-tacks rattling round, it could well be the timing, which if allied to slightly out of sinc carbs, well that can make quite a din, if you also have the timing side coil going down as well....
swap the coils over and see if there's any improvement, that'll get the coil out or into the equation. Also it sounds like the seal has gone on the cam.
If your still running a Lucas RITA Ignition, it may well be getting to the end of its natural.
