Before I take the plate off, and I really don't want to time the bike again, is there another way to do this? What are the readings I'm seeing, then?
We're talking about the same part; I can get the probe into the middle groove in the plastic shield onto a bit of what looks like solder, on the inboard side of the strap you describe.

This started with an alternator issue and has become a Pandora's box. I'm trying to solve one problem at a time, as I'm able.
