Hi Mick, well if you've swapped over everything on the HT side of the ignition, that only leaves the LT side as causing the problem.
Check or replace all the connections and cables that feed the coil on the left side and the contact breakers (if you have them)
It sounds as if you've possibly got an intermittent contact on the low tension circuit that is collapsing under load or when things start warming up, that's cutting out the left hand cylinder.
And, now I think about it, if you've got one cylinder that's running poorly it's probably resulting in an imbalance in the crankshaft - and that could be the cause of your funny noise?
