I've never heard of anyone doing that, (as owners normally want to do the opposite on the later models in order to fit a dry belt drive etc.) but I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't do so, if you wanted to?
The '70-on models also have a breather cover plate (71-1072) inside the primary case behind the clutch to reduce the amount of oil (mist) blown out from the breather, so you may need to fit a similar cover plate as I don't think the 71-1072 plate is likely to fit inside the earlier case without some modificatons being done?

You could remove the timed breather mechanism, or you could simply leave it in position? But either way, you would certainly need to block off the breather outlet pipe.
