Matt certainly has a "wet sump" by the sounds of it and perhaps that should be addressed first ?
I can think of no other way than to remove the timing cover and strip and clean the oil pump, paticularly the check valve balls/seats.
Matt, listen up.
When you remove the timing cover to get at the oil pump make really sure that you have the bike leaned well over toward the drive side.
If you do not it is likely that a cam drive idler gear will come off with the timing cover and you will then need to learn how to set cam timing.
Oil pump service is not difficult, the hardest bit being removal of ignition auto advance mechanism and subsequent re-timing of ignition if you have the ex factory contact breaker ignition.
If electronic ignition is fitted you would mark the "breaker plate" in relation to the timing cover and set back to that mark and forget at reassembly.
As regards Electronic Ignition I have no axe to grind but the Trispark is best IMO, I use that and a Jappa twin lead 12V coil.
Electronic ignition is much kinder to engines than the old whirlygig/random mechanical advance mechanism, if you intend to travel many miles using various quality fuels the softer advance curve of electronics will gain value.
Apologies if I have elaborated too much, you certainly need to clean that oil pump and modernising on the way in and out may or may not suit your budget.
