Clive, if your ring dangles down and touches your handlebars, I'd say that an electrical fault is the least of your problems....
OK, back to business. Do the indicators work properly? And does the sparking coincide with the indicator flashing? Indicators are notorious for having bad earths but I don't know if the indicators on a 1980ES are body or hard wired earth?
It could be a short in the switch itself though that's electrifying the bars?
