Rear wheel spindle

Does it matter which way you fit the rear wheel spindle,ie nut to left rather than right. Only wondering as Iv put it in the wrong way on a tired evening and really cant be bothered becoming a human octopus and juggling the wheel while I tap the spindle past those bloody annoying tissue paper thin chain adjusters that bend and snag as you push the spindle through.
