Let's say it probably won't be helping matters if the battery is flat or nearly flat.
However, points ignition often continues to operate even if the battery is partially discharged but if the battery has gone flat then you may need to check the charging system and/or the battery may need replacing? These bikes do not have very powerful alternators, and continuous slow riding at low revs and also with the headlight on during daytime doesn't exactly help to keep the battery charged up.
