Hi Andrew, thanks for the chronology, clarifies things. There is an engine breather stub on top of the exhaust rocker box, so yes you can have oil mist in the rocker box, but without seeing it sounds to me like it's just an oil leak. The kicking back (painful foot) indicates advanced timing. My money is now firmly on the timing, possibly/probably a seized bobweight mechanism. You'll get there, don't worry, this process is what makes old bikes enjoyable and satisfying in spite of the frustrations.
