Hi Andrew, up to you of course if you want some mechanical entertainment, but personally I'd reset the exhaust tappets according to the manual, i.e. one exhaust tappet fully down and set the other and vice versa, and try the compression test with the throttle fully open first. If your exhaust valves were stuck open to the extent that the rockers move without making contact with the valve tips, the valve heads would almost certainly be hitting the piston...so I have some doubts there...HUGE clearances sound a bit more likely.
