Using grinding paste sounds like a pretty good idea to me.
Like I mentioned, there's plenty of 'meat' on both the shaft and the clutch centre and I've simply dressed them with a file. Grinding paste could certainly get a smoother finish.
I think a lot of problems in this area stem from poor quality Woodruff keys. They're supposed to be hardened or possibly case hardened, I'm not sure, so if you get one that's fabricated from mild steel or is an incorrect fit then that results in an awful lot of force hinging on a very weak link...
