Unlikely that you have oil on top of the piston as you'd notice plumes of blue-grey smoke when starting. I reckon the oil is probably residue from the leak you had, but by the sound of it you could have a blown head gasket (which you would also almost certainly be able to hear). Or alternatively blow-back onto the head from a leaking exhaust pipe to stub joint?
