Coils wired in series (as they must be for a Tri-Spark 'Classic Twin' ignition) in a 12V system must share the available voltage, therefore two 12V coils will only be operating at half their rated voltage, so although two 12V coils will still produce sparks, the spark output voltage would be considerably less than that produced by two 6V coils.
