shell colors

I have a pair of young red-eared sliders, and I when I first got them the lighting in my tank was not adequate. Consequently their shells turned brownish and lost the distinctive patterns. I have since corrected that problem and there is color in the new shell growth. My question is this: will their shells be forever darkened in that spot, or will they eventually regain their coloring there. thanks j
