Shell rot?

I have a female red slider about 8 yrs. old. I found a couple of small spots on the under side of her shell by her back leg where the shell has become bad and started caving in. I've been putting iodine on them and letting her wander around for a couple hrs. so it could dry out before she gets back in the tank. Is this shell rot and what can I do to get rid of it? She's never had this problem before.
