Gregg-I can give you general information about Co. C. It was a rifle company composed of about 150 men divided into squads of 8 men armed primairly with the MI Garand rifle- but also some Browning Automatic Rifles for rapid fire and some 60 mm. mortars for indirect fire. A rifle company is of course the "work-horse" of an Infantry Regiment. Leads in action-gets the most casualties on a percentage basis of any war time unit- in otherwords takes and holds the ground. I was in a Heavy Weapons Company-heavy mortars & mach. guns-but we did not lead the charge. C. company means he was in the ist Battalion of the 114th Inf. Reg. Most tasks were assigned by battalion strength so his company would have cooperated mostly with A-B-D companies of the 114th. A History of the 44th Div. might give a record of specific actions of his battalion & or Company. Hope this is of some use to you-regards--Roddy
