Never saw insignia on helmets but some officers-in fact most- did wear their bars even on the front lines. Hope you get some information on your Grandfather Captain-your best bet is Bob Deich who has the best records of soldiers of the 44th Inf.Div. bvdeich@starbase.neosoft.com is his e-mail address.
