Posted by Amelia (Harner) Newlan ...I posted the above message at another site for the 44th and received information that my grandfather was actually listed on membership rolls under the 324th with the 3rd Bn, HQ Co. Anyone recognize his name? Thanks again.

I am searching for information based on what my grandfather has been able to tell me on his days in the Army. If this is familiar to anyone, please contact me. On his return to the States, he did not talk about his service until I joined the Marine Corps in 1991. Since then we have realized that it is a very difficult subject for him. Our family would like to know what it was like while he was serving in the Army. He has given me the information that outlines his basic service from enlistment (underage)in PA to discharge in Washington State. This spans from Camp Blanding in 1944 to serving with B Company, 223rd Battalion, 68th Infantry Regimenty, 44th Division. I am having trouble finding information on these units. He said from USS Excelsior out of New York they arrived in Le Havre, France. From there they worked their way across to Germany - crossing the Rhine at Worms. From here they went to Prutz and Landeck, Austria and met up with the 10th Mountain Division who were coming up from Italy. He says they travelled through the "Berna Pass" and left Austria. Arriving back in Le Havre - they travelled to South Hampton, England and visited Glasgow, Scotland before boarding the Queen Elizabeth for New York again.
Thanks to anyone who might be able to give me more information!!
