Hello travis
I used to exercise regularly. I would put 1 to 2 miles on a treadmill every other day at a brisk jog.
Those days are gone for me, unfortunately. I simply no longer have the air to put myself through that any longer, and haven't for a while now. I get winded on stairs as well, so I do find myself avoiding them.
I do eat well. As I do have a cooking background, I tend to stay away from "diet" food, though, and prefer to cook with whole, real foods whenever possible, and stay away from packaged convenience items as much as possible. Farmers markets are becoming more common now that the weather is nice here, so I have loads of fresh veggies and fruit around.
On top of that, I have one of the most amazing butcher shops nearby; they actually do the whole thing right on site (the cows and pigs are right out the back door!), as well as some more esoteric choices locally available (emu and ostrich meats are both amazing, if you've not tried it). Other locally produced items are venison (in huge quantity), fresh water fish, milk, cheese and lots of other dairy.
Other choices are open to me as well, the local semi-mega-food-mart-thing has an excellent selection of saltwater fish (including shark, yum!), and more odd vegetables and seasonings.
Eating right, when it comes to whole food, is a LOT easier than trying to actually make 'diet' food actually healthy. Also, preparing my own food cuts down on actually eating too much, I've found. I've never understood the fad diets, myself. Eat whole, real food, prepare it yourself, and slow down on portion size. Problem solved
I am on a host of medications for my apnea as well as other issues I have. I always try to take as little of them as I can though, and I experiment with dosages after my doctor prescribes them. While I don't skip days, I try to keep them to an absolute minimum. My doctor actually appreciates this, as everyone is different, and with the items I'm on, it's best if I keep it to a minimum. Then again, the side effects of 'not' taking the medications I need are not quite life threating, yet.
I found out long ago that I do not like the taste of alcohol, and the effect it has on me is not something I enjoy. I get whiny, angry, and end up off in a corner waiting for this bad feeling to stop, rather than actually enjoy it.
I see no point to most other narcotics; if you can't enjoy your current state, why would you try to 'enhance' it further?
So, my only vice is my smoking, and while I admit that I overdo it, I enjoy it
